1994 Audi S2 Coupe Quattro 20v Turbo (230PS)
What can I say? I just love the S2 with its glorious ‘straight five’ engine note and the tuning ability up to 1000bhp.
This example is an immaculate, unmodified and original UK specification car. I would go further to say that it’s probably the finest example I’ve ever seen and is easily the best currently for sale in the UK at the moment plus I’ve never seen one in this colour, until now.
It is the more powerful updated ‘8B3 039 model code’ ABY engined car with the 6-speed manual gearbox (earlier ones were 5). It has air conditioning as well as a sunroof and original ‘Avus’ alloys. It has covered only 126k miles and has the all important FSH with more than 18 stamps in the book!!
In 1991, with the success of the ’80’s UR Quattro still firmly in the world’s mind, Audi introduced what would become the first of the long line of ‘S’ cars which still exist today. The S2 continued using the straight 5-cylinder 2.2 litre 20 valve turbo engine which made the ‘UR’ (standing for Original) Quattro so special.
With its distinct off-beat engine note, and easily usable power delivery, Audi squeezed out another 10 horse power which brought it to 230PS. A simple (and safe) remap to 270bhp for £650 (see QS Tuning) and up to 420bhp if you really feel the need! They left the permanent four wheel drive system alone, perfect for the winter, and evolved the boxy design of the 80’s into the more rounded appearance that doesn’t even look out of place today. Distinctive enough to get appreciating glances for those in the know, but not not so much attention that you can’t leave it in a supermarket car park. This a a perfectly usable performance classic, with the capacity for a family, and a sub 6 second 0-60 acceleration!!! An Audi concept that has endured to this day.
This completely unmodified and beautiful S2 Coupe is presented in the special order ‘Lifestyle’ colour of Pelican Blue (also known as Kingfisher Blue), has the convenience of air conditioning AND a sunroof. Perfect to let you hear that glorious engine note. It has covered only 126k miles from new, has a fully stamped service history, has just been serviced, Taxed, MOTd, new tyres and brakes fitted, and is ready to entertain. It also benefits from a recent respray and with a little preparation this could easily provide the foundation for a concourse d’elegance winner, it really is that good. It’s all about originality.
With an annual tax of only £230 it could also make sense as a daily driver compared with the more expensive tax bracket of £500 for performance cars registered after March 2006.
According to “How Many Left?” there are less than 200 S2 Coupes currently taxed for use on the road, and even fewer that are original down to the correct alloys, so it might be a long while before you see one coming the other direction. It’s HPi clear so there are no recorded accidents or outstanding finance for peace of mind.
Here’s what some of the crazy people do with them!!
