It’s the more sought after 3-door model with the bullet proof AGU 1.8 20v Turbo engine developing 150bhp. This is easily tuneable for minimal expense into a reliable 196bhp. The AGU engines have stronger internals than the later cars and if you’re going for big horsepower then this is the one to start with.
In this case though it’s been left completely unmodified and is a perfect blank canvas to add your own tuning touches.
I have rarely seen a vehicle where you can trace its history so perfectly back to when it was first registered. We know the FULL history, even the original salesman’s name! This is a genuine original vehicle, totally unmolested, in a specification just as it rolled off the production line.
On 21st January 1999 this beautiful Indigo Blue, 3-door VW Golf 1.8T was put on as a demonstrator by Grange Volkswagen in Brentwood Essex. As such is was specified so as to showcase most, if not all, of the options available at the time. It has a full ‘Winter Pack’ with heated seats, mirrors, and washer jets. It has a larger capacity washer bottle and headlamp washers. It has a FULL anthracite RECARO interior and even more rare that there are even Recaro seats fitted in the rear. Further options include the ‘Climatronic’ automatic climate control and ultra rare VW BBS RXII two-piece alloy wheels.
Seven months later, on 7th August 1999, Mr and Mrs Haunton walked into the showroom and were greeted by Mr Whitehouse, one of the resident salesmen. Mrs Haunton wanted to change her 1995 Mk3 1.8 VW Golf Driver for something a little different. She’d only done 35,500 miles in it but was smitten by the new model with only 6,600 demonstration miles. She arranged to get £6,500 as a trade in against the £18,495 required for her new car and drove it away the same day. It was registered in her husbands name and remained so for the next 15 years. The V5 is correctly stating that there is only one previous keeper.
All of the original documentation that came when the car was new is still present, even the original Volkswagen Emergency Assistance credit card is there still attached to the A4 page! The booklets look as if they’ve never been read and the Gamma radio booklet even has the code card still attached. We even have the three original keys and even the little black plastic wallet key is there. You rarely see those. This is complemented by all the tax discs from 1999 to 2014 (19 in total)
